Deb, I edited that post and corrected spelling. The author of the "The Golden Bough" is James Frazer.
I note that it is available from Amazon. It is a book that should be every church library. Most people are just unaware of where many Christian practices originated. I don't say they are all wrong. Christmas can get out of hand as many people max out their credit cards. Also, interestingly, there are more suicides during the Christmas season than any other time of the year.
Still and all, it can be a joyous time for families to get together and sharing gifts within reason.
And, of course, there is no basis at all for saying Jesus was born on Dec 25. For one thing the shepherds were in the fields etc. In the winter in that part of the world, sheep are normally kept in winter pasturage.
