It is not often that politics mirrors faith or that the secular reflects the spiritual, but Tuesdays election results did just that. As a practicing Catholic who understands that faith requires daily practice, I am amazed by the eerie similarity between what has happened to those who profess to follow the GOP as conservatives and those who profess to follow GOD as Catholics.
Like the GOP, the Catholic Church has allowed itself to become mired in arrogance, corruption, compromise, and confusion. It has slipped from its proper place of defending what it should stand for to become as well, a rag-tag bunch of selfish cowards seeking only to cover their clerical and leadership hides.
We have bishops who hold their personal politics and views above church teaching, the scandals so gleefully covered by the media, an increasing pattern of diluting and compromising the faith to spread comfort and convenience, and a resulting confusion among its faithful over what is correct or incorrect conduct.
The greatest irony of all of this is that the American Catholic Church is sliding down like the Republican Party while acting very much like the Democratic Party. Statistics show that many clerics and a surprising number of faithful vote Democratic.
